The Ministry of Health & Medical Services has issued a public warning following sightings of dangerous box jellyfish in local waters, urging Fijians to exercise caution when at sea.

The alert comes after several patients presented at the Ministry’s Hyperbaric Unit with breathing difficulties after recent ocean exposure.

The Ministry did not specify the areas where the patients came from.

In coordination with the Ministry of Fisheries, health officials say the box jellyfish is highly venomous and poses a serious risk to swimmers, fishers and coastal communities.

Members of the public are being advised to take precautionary measures, including avoiding swimming in affected areas and remaining vigilant while at sea.

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as breathing problems or severe pain after marine exposure is strongly urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are calling on the public to heed all safety advisories.
