Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad says this year’s Diwali celebration reflects a renewed sense of hope, energy, and unity among Fijians.

“As we celebrate Diwali, there is clearly a sense of renewed energy, hope and display of determination, courage, patriotism and commitment towards making Fiji a land of hope and opportunity for all our people,” Professor Prasad said.

The National Federation Party leader said since the coalition government took office on 24 December 2022, he has witnessed “an abundance of goodwill, tolerance, unity and peaceful mutual co-existence amongst Fiji’s multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural population.”

He said these virtues reflect the true spirit of Diwali — truth, justice, righteousness, and humility.

“Deepavali or Diwali is the Festival of Lights. It is a time of rejoicing with family and friends. It is also a time for prayer and reflection about those less fortunate,” he said.

“The lighting of the traditional lamp, Diya, symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and most importantly, truth over evil.”

Professor Prasad said the light from the Diya “re-commits all of us to bring light to any place facing darkness,” adding that Hindus draw resilience and strength from their faith and unity.

He said the values represented by Lord Rama’s return from exile remain deeply relevant today.

“Lord Rama is the embodiment of honesty, integrity, good governance and humility. The virtues of Lord Rama and the significance of Diwali are extremely relevant.”

Professor Prasad said the coalition government has upheld these same values through transparency, accountability, and respect for fundamental freedoms.

“The coalition government has given true meaning to common and equal citizenry by both granting and guaranteeing fundamental freedoms like freedom of speech, freedom of association and freedom of the media,” he said.

“When the coalition government makes mistakes, it accepts criticism. But we have always ensured that good governance, transparency and accountability are upheld. And this important principle has seen Fiji regain its reputation as a symbol of unity and beacon of hope.”

He said the government’s willingness to engage with citizens through town hall meetings organised by the Fijian Media Association showed it was listening to the people.

“Together we are illuminating the lives of our people and restoring pride and patriotism,” he said.
“This is just the beginning. We know much more needs to be done. And I can confidently say that much better days lie ahead.”

Professor Prasad concluded by extending Diwali greetings to all Fijians.

“We wish everyone a joyous and blessed Diwali. May the Lord’s blessing be upon all of you.”
