Fiji Labour Party leader and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry reflected on the timeless lessons of the Hindu epic Ramayan, urging Fijians to draw inspiration from its high moral values during challenging times.

“Diwali, with myriads of diyas and shimmering fairy lights brightening up homes and parapets on the darkest night of the year, is a reminder of the enduring resilience of the human spirit,” he said.

He connected this symbolism directly to the current situation in Fiji.

“Here in Fiji, no matter how gloomy the circumstances may be and how unpromising the future, Diwali brings with it fresh hopes for a better and more promising year ahead.”

The Labour leader delved into the religious and philosophical foundations of the celebration, noting that Diwali is “steeped in antiquity” and rooted in the story of Lord Rama.

He highlighted the epic’s core narrative, which ends with “the triumph of good over evil as he defeats the evil Ravana and returns to Ayodhya for a glorious future.”

However, Mr. Chaudhry emphasised that the Ramayan’s relevance extends far beyond a simple heroic tale.

“But beyond this heroic tale of human endurance and eventual triumph, the Ramayan deals with the intricacies of human nature, of personal integrity, discipline and adherence to principles despite all odds and challenges, something from which we can all learn,” he said.

“As we celebrate Diwali this year, I call on everyone, parents in particular, to dwell on the values and virtues embodied in this epic tale by Valmiki.”
