The growth of handball in Fiji has taken another significant step forward aimed at building national squads and identifying future representatives.
Handball Fiji secretary Lusi Rokoura said the sport, introduced locally after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, has continued to gain traction, with administrators working hard to establish strong foundations in the country.
“Following the Rio Olympics, a few of us came together to introduce handball in Fiji because we saw its potential and how well suited it is for our people,” Rokoura said.
She said handball’s unique blend of skills – combining elements of netball, basketball, volleyball and athletics, made it ideal for players known for their strength, agility and power.
The newly launched elimination cup features four women’s teams and two men’s teams, with matches played over six weeks.
The tournament serves as a key selection platform for national squads.
“This competition is forming the base for selecting our players. Those who perform well and commit themselves will earn their place in the national teams,” Rokoura said.
Teams like Namosi, Tailevu, Golden Eagles and Unity have already joined the competition, with plans to involve tertiary institutions such as Fiji National University and University of the South Pacific soon.
Preparation is already underway for upcoming international tournaments, with the under-17 women’s team set to travel to Romania later this year, while the men’s under-19 side is expected to compete in New Zealand.
Rokoura has encouraging more players to get involved. Matches will be held every Saturday over the next five weeks.
