SWIRE Shipping Fijian Drua halfback Philip Baselala is set to make his first start for the Drua when they take on the Western Force tomorrow in Round 14 of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific at Churchill Park, Lautoka.
After making several appearances off the bench this season, the 20-year-old from Solotavui, Nakasaleka in Kadavu has finally been given the nod to run out in the starting jersey, a move Head Coach Glen Jackson says reflects the coaching staff’s confidence in the young playmaker.
“This is a really big one for me,” Baselala shared.
“Starting at nine is something I’ve worked hard for. I’ll never back down from the challenges that other halfbacks have thrown at me.”
Despite the milestone, Baselala remains grounded and focused on the job at hand.
“Our focus this week hasn’t changed. Same as the last two weeks, just getting into the rucks, delivering clean ball to the boys, and keeping the comms sharp with the forwards.
“The preparation has been good. I haven’t changed my routine, it’s the same as last week, but the intensity this week is on another level,” he added.
With tomorrow’s match being Drua’s final game on home soil this season, Baselala had a heartfelt message for fans in the West.
“Come out in numbers, it’s our last game here in Fiji. This is your team and we’re ready to take on the Force.”
All eyes will be on the young Kadavu halfback as he steps into the spotlight for his biggest challenge.
