Several communities were rattled yesterday after an unusual hailstorm swept through parts of the country.
Residents in the interior of Vanua Levu, including Nabunicibi and Vaturova in Cakaudrove, reported ice pellets falling during a brief but intense burst of severe weather.
Similar conditions were also experienced in Nawairuku, Ra, and Nadarivatu, where hailstones struck roofs and yards, surprising early-evening villagers.
According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, the hail was associated with a severe thunderstorm cell that developed over the highlands.
A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall was issued yesterday for interior, southern and eastern parts of Viti Levu as well as the southern half of Vanua Levu.
