Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider has won a prestigious award at the Rome Film Festival.
A Hindi adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the film received the People’s Choice Award in the Mondo Genere (world genre) category — the first time that a Hindi film has won the top prize at the world-renowned festival.
The director attended the film’s screening and award presentation along with star Shahid Kapoor, who has been internationally lauded for his seminal performance.
An elated Kapoor tweeted an image from the award presentation with the message: “1st festival 1st win . Too much . Wowzaaaa
“People’s choice in the main category at the Rome film festival .. A first for an Indian film . #haider . Proud and humbled.”
