Habitat for Humanity Fiji will construct a child wellbeing centre under a new partnership with the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, aimed at providing critical support services for children living and working on the streets across Fiji’s four divisions.

The partnership was formalised yesterday with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening child protection systems in line with the Child Care and Protection Act 2024 and the Child Justice Act 2024.

The proposed centre will offer a safe, supportive and rehabilitative environment for children in need of care and protection.

It is expected to serve as a central platform for coordinated interventions, including access to social services, psychosocial support, referral pathways and reintegration programmes.

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran said the collaboration marked an important step forward in safeguarding vulnerable children.

“The Ministry will continue to work with key stakeholders, development partners and civil society organisations to ensure that every child in Fiji grows up safe, protected and supported,” Ms Kiran said.

She added that the initiative aligns with national priorities to prevent neglect, exploitation and abuse, while also addressing the root causes that push children onto the streets.

Interim National Director of Habitat for Humanity Fiji Sangita Kumar said the organisation was honoured to partner with Government on the project.

“This collaboration brings together government leadership and community-based expertise to deliver sustainable infrastructure that supports child development, safety and dignity,” she said, adding that it also strengthens community resilience and inclusive social development.

Construction of the child wellbeing centre will begin once technical and implementation arrangements are completed, with the facility designed to meet the specific needs of children requiring care and protection services.

The location of the centre has not been disclosed.
