Army commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai yesterday told 156 recruits that they were guardians of democracy – and the oath they had undertaken meant they would have to protect and serve all citizens “regardless of their status or position in society”.

He said the “foundation of the democracy we stand for now is built on the principles of equality and justice for all”.

The basic recruit passing out parade at the Force Training Group yesterday was his first as Republic of Fiji Military Forces commander.

He reminded the recruits that the career path they had chosen required a different level of dedication and perseverance.

“You will be required to put aside on most occasions your personal commitments, your family, and your own pleasures as you face and endure the many challenges and sacrifices associated with your responsibilities,” Mr Kalouniwai said.

“In all that you do, remember always that dedication and perseverance will be key.

“You have a duty to ensure that justice is available for all, not just for the select few.

“This means upholding the highest standards of professionalism, even in the face of adversity.

“Remember that you are not just soldiers, but also guardians of our democracy, and that your actions have the power to shape the future of our nation.

“As members of the RFMF, you will always be held accountable to the highest standards of our institution’s values.”

Mr Kalouniwai said that integrity was the bedrock of the RFMF, and this meant doing the right thing “even when no one is watching and holding ourselves accountable to the highest standards of ethical behaviour”.
