The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources has started acquisition works for the proposed Waiqele Airport in Labasa.

In a release, the ministry said the transformative national development marks a new chapter for Vanua Levu and the Northern Division.

“In partnership with Fiji Airports and the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), our Ministry is leading the groundwork for this landmark project by undertaking critical land identification, geospatial mapping, and engagement with landowners and tenants in the Waiqele area,” it said.

The first phase, the ministry said included identification of strategically located land parcels, detailed title and boundary searches via the Ministry’s Geospatial Division, consultations with TLTB and affected landowners and the valuation and compensation planning under the State Acquisition of Lands Act 1940.

The ministry reiterated that transparency and fairness were at the core of this process.

“Our valuers and land officials are meeting directly with communities to ensure all stakeholders are well-informed and justly compensated,” it said.

“As we move forward, the ministry remains committed to balancing progress with respect for land rights and environmental responsibility.

“The Waiqele International Airport is not just an infrastructure upgrade — it is a gateway to economic opportunity, improved connectivity, and a brighter future for the North.”
