APPROVAL for gravel extraction is given at times without the full consent of landowners, according to Ministry of iTaukei Affairs official Jope Koroisavou.
“In some cases, only a few landowners have received limited benefits, leaving many others excluded,” he said.
Mr Koroisavou said there had been instances where approval for gravel excavation had been given without the required 60 per cent consent of native landowners.
“This lack of proper consultation and uneven distribution is causing frustration among communities,” he said.
Mr Koroisavou added that many landowners felt left out of key decisions about the use of their land.
“It is essential that all activities involving land use follow legal procedures and respect the rights of all landowners involved.”
He said if the situation continued, it could lead to legal disputes and mistrust among clan members.
