The Government has stepped in to support sugarcane farmers affected by the recent fire at the Rarawai Sugar Mill in Ba, announcing a $15 per tonne compensation for all cane diverted to Lautoka.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh confirmed the financial assistance during a visit to the damaged mill alongside Acting Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad.

The visit aimed to assess the extent of the damage and reassure stakeholders, including farmers, mill workers, and members of the Rarawai Lorry Drivers Association, that government remains committed to the continuation of harvesting operations.

Despite the disruption, Minister Singh said all cane would be harvested this season.

“We understand the struggles our farmers are facing during this difficult time. No cane will be left behind,” he said.

He added that the Lautoka Sugar Mill will now process cane from Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, and assured that the government, through the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), is committed to supporting the logistical shift.

The $15 per tonne assistance is intended to ease the burden of increased transportation costs due to the diversion of cane to Lautoka. Close to 400,000 tonnes of cane remain to be harvested between Rarawai and Lautoka mill areas.

In addition to support for farmers, Minister Singh assured that no FSC employees will lose their jobs due to the fire.

“All FSC staff will retain their jobs and job security is guaranteed,” he said.

The Ministry is coordinating with stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and protect the livelihoods of those dependent on the sugar industry.
