The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has confirmed that it will provide free chemotherapy medication for newly diagnosed cancer patients at Lautoka and Ba Hospitals, following public concerns about the availability of cancer treatment.

Fiji Cancer Society CEO Belinda Chan had yesterday raised concern that this service had stopped at Aspen hospitals.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry clarified that prescriptions for newly diagnosed patients will be sent to the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services (FPBS), which will then supply the necessary medication to the two hospitals for admitted patients or dispense it for outpatient care.

“The Ministry of Health & Medical Services wishes to confirm that it will provide chemotherapy medication free of cost for newly diagnosed cancer patients at the two hospitals,” the statement read.

“We are committed to ensuring that patients receive quality health services when and where they need them.”
