The increase in illegal transport operators across Fiji has been attributed to a shortage of proper transport services, according to Infrastructure Assistant Minister Naisa Tuinaceva.

“The increase in illegal operations is sometimes a direct result of legal operators failing to provide adequate services, especially during the night,” he said.

Mr Tuinaceva said the issue of private vehicles operating illegally as taxis was not only confined to Savusavu.

“The Land Transport Authority and Fiji Police Force are tasked with addressing the problem.”

He said the Government was taking the issue seriously and had procedures in place to manage it, including enforcement action.

“This is an issue that is faced across towns and cities in Fiji.”

Mr Tuinaceva added, however, that balancing enforcement with the need to improve transport options for Fijians remains a challenge.
