The Government says a fuel leak at an industrial facility in Walu Bay has been contained, with inspections confirming no evidence of fuel entering nearby waterways or affecting marine life.
In a statement, Government said joint inspections were carried out by the Department of Environment, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Ministry of Health following the incident.
Containment systems were activated immediately, directing the fuel into the facility’s bund and separator pit.
Fuel transfer operations to lower tank levels and allow permanent repairs have now been completed, with support from the National Fire Authority.
Inspectors reported only limited overflow within the site boundary, which is being addressed through controlled clean-up under regulatory supervision.
Drone surveillance of drainage outlets and river systems around Walu Bay detected no signs of fuel discharge.
“At this stage, there are no observed impacts on marine life or the surrounding riverine environment,” the statement said, adding that monitoring will continue as a precaution.
The operator has been ordered to cover all containment and clean-up costs. Regulatory notices have also been issued requiring full remediation, preventive maintenance, and infrastructure upgrades.
Government said it will continue to strengthen regulatory oversight to protect public safety and reduce environmental risks.
