The Government has dismissed claims by the Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu that the country is being run in chaos, describing his continued criticism as “desperate” and misleading.

In a statement, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Deputy Leader of the People’s Alliance Party (PAP), said the Government continues to function normally and respects all legal and constitutional processes, including those before the courts.

“There is no chaos as Hon Seruiratu asserts,” Mr Tuisawau said.

“Government continues to function as normal, respecting all processes of law both outside and within the courts. The judiciary and courts are operating as they should.”

Mr Tuisawau claimed the Opposition leader’s criticism stemmed from political uncertainty, arguing that the People’s First Party would struggle to meet the five per cent electoral threshold without former prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

“He knows that without Bainimarama and Hon Khaiyum, their party will not make the five per cent threshold,” Mr Tuisawau said, adding that previous electoral success was driven largely by those leaders.

He said the People’s Alliance Party remained united and focused on delivering services to improve livelihoods.

“The People’s Alliance Party is intact, with many services and deliveries already completed to uplift the lives of our people,” he said.

Mr Tuisawau also criticised the People’s First Party’s branding and ideology, describing it as confusing and linked to what he termed the “Sunset Clause ideology” of the 2006 coup.

“Those who were silent between 2006 and 2022 while people were suppressed are now trying to return under the disguise of saviours,” he said.

He reiterated that Government institutions were functioning properly and rejected claims of instability.
