The previous government did not have a robust pipeline of projects to effectively tackle Fiji’s water challenges, says Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

He said the current government was committed to putting in place comprehensive infrastructure plans and measures to address these issues.

Ro Filipe said more projects would be introduced to mitigate annual water shortages and related problems faced by many communities up North.

He said due to the impact of climate change and unpredictable weather patterns, there was a need for strategic planning.

“We recognise these challenges, and they require the Government’s careful consideration as we move forward,” Ro Filipe said, adding the Government had assessed water needs across both urban and rural areas.

“There are strategies and infrastructure plans in place to widen the water network, not only drawing from existing catchment areas but also by developing new sources,” Ro Filipe said.

He said the Government, in collaboration with the Lands Ministry, planned to develop boreholes as solar-powered desalination plants.

“These initiatives are part of ongoing discussions that involve careful planning and financing to ensure a sustainable water supply for Fiji’s future.”

The Government’s focus on expanding and modernising water infrastructure is seen as a critical step towards securing reliable access to clean water across the nation.
