Government focuses on upgrading sports facilities

WORK on a number of sporting facilities around the country are currently underway and are expected to be completed by next year.

At the official opening of the Victoria Tennis Courts yesterday Prime Minister Voreqe Bainamarama said the work in progress was to ensure that people around the country were given the same opportunities in terms of what was available to them.

“These athletic facilities provide opportunities to get out of the house, get moving and make ourselves even healthier people. This push by my Government is not only limited to Suva,” he said.

The State has contributed $2.1million for the redevelopment of Lawaqa Park. The Fitness Centre in Laucala Bay Suva received thirty new cardio machines amounting to a total cost of $100,000.

In Lautoka $2.8 million of next year’s budget will be diverted to the upgrade of Churchill Park which Bainimarama said would include an all-weather track. The Botanical Garden in Lautoka would also be facilitated with a new swimming pool, open to the public for recreational activities.

In Ba the Government has contributed $203,000 for the construction of the Ba multipurpose sports complex which will now include an upgraded horse race track.

“As we approach the end of this year, all our efforts to reach a healthier society will continue into 2016 because this job will not be done until every Fijian has access to the same opportunities to engage in a healthy lifestyle,” Bainimarama said.
