Opposition MP Premila Kumar has accused the Government of operating on impulse rather than principle, following the reported transfer of the Fiji National University (FNU) to the Office of the Prime Minister and its subsequent return to the Ministry of Education.

Ms Kumar said the episode exposed indecision at the highest level of leadership and raised serious questions about governance under Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

“This is not a mere administrative adjustment,” she said.

“It is a glaring example of indecision at the highest level of government. What type of governance is this — government by impulse?”

She questioned how a verbal directive could be issued to move FNU under the Prime Minister’s office, only for the decision to be quietly reversed, saying such actions undermine confidence in leadership.

“If the Prime Minister himself cannot stand by his own decisions, on what basis can he demand discipline from his Cabinet or accountability from public servants?” Ms Kumar asked.

She said FNU should not be treated as a political tool.

“FNU is not a political football to be kicked from one ministry to another at the whim of the Prime Minister’s mood,” she said.

Ms Kumar added that the Office of the Prime Minister requires certainty, authority and a clear sense of direction, warning that repeated backtracking signals weak leadership.

“What the public is witnessing is hesitation, reversal and an absence of firm leadership,” she said.
