Krishna Gounder fears losing his fishing business to the continuous hike in fuel prices.

The Varadoli, Ba resident is one of the many fishermen in the West who have taken a hit by the increase in price of fuel.

“I have been selling fish for more than 40 years, and this fuel crisis is affecting us badly,” he said.

“The price of fish has gone up and the regular sales we can’t do.”

Mr Gounder said fishing was a good trade for him and his family who depend on the business for their survival.

“I had sold my boat, but I have got a business licence to buy and sell fish in the market.

“When I bought a bundle from a fisherman last month it was $140 a bundle but now it has increased to $200 a bundle.

“Definitely the price of fish will increase in the market.”

He said the fresh fish are being sold to him by the fishermen from the Yasawas.

“The fuel crisis is making things so hard, everyone has to do something for a living now, no one in the family can stay home.

“They have to do find something for their bread and butter.”
