Good start for champs

DEFENDING champions Loretta Kotoisuva, Elizabeth Mocewai, Sheral Mar and Litia Tikoisuva recorded wins in the opening rounds of the Fiji Airways 9th Sunny West Bowling Carnival at the Nadi Sports & Social Club greens yesterday.

The national squad combination defeated Jimmy Kishore, Lily Hansen, Ruby Mudford and Winston Leaver 27-2 and then edged the team of Jan Oregan, Cameron Laird, Stephan Oregan and Troy Stafford 13-12.

The Arun Kumar-skippered team with Kushal Pillay, Rajnish Prasad and Santok Singh also recorded two wins.

The side downed the combination of Iliaz Khan, Raymond Singh, Bobby Prasad and Abdul Kalim 17-9.

In the next game they defeated the team of Sheila Bennion, Benau Bennion, Ili Seru and David Bennion 16-12.

Santok who is the junior bowls director of the club said a junior competition would run alongside the main event today.

He said Fiji Airways had sponsored the major prizes.

“The junior competition will be played for the first time,” Santok said.

“There are 20 players who have been divided into ten teams. After the pool stage the players will be seeded in the cup, plate, bowl and shield divisions.

“Fiji Airways have donated four airline tickets to any domestic destination except for the Lau Group.

“The club has given the other consolation prizes and also cash. All the participants will be given movie vouchers with refreshments.

“This is the launch of our junior bowls development program,” he added.
