It was a dominant start for Tribal Risk Nasinu 2 in the Vulaca Volleyball Championship, as they defeated Nadonumai 2 in two straight sets on the first day of the competition at the FMF National Gymnasium in Suva yesterday.
The scores were 25-15, 25-15.
Nasinu Volleyball Association has three teams competing in the championship, with Nasinu 1 being the defending champions in the men’s grade and Suva women reigning champions in the women’s grade.
Nasinu team captain and former national men’s netball player Nacanieli Goneyali expressed his satisfaction with the young talents joining the team.
He emphasised the importance of new players pushing the older ones to improve and for everyone to work together to succeed.
“It’s good to see young talents coming in, that doesn’t harbour the old talents that are already at the spot, this is an opportunity for older players to pull up their skills,” said Goneyali.
Goneyali, who has represented Fiji in Men’s Netball and mixed Netball, highlighted the benefits of participating in different sports.
He praised his team’s preparation for the championship, noting that it was their first major tournament.
“Preparations for the competition was great, it’s the first big tournament so far for Volleyball, so the team is well and prepared for any challenges ahead.
Reflecting on their first match, Goneyali described it as a good warmup for the team and expressed his happiness with the result.
He acknowledged that their opponent had young talent and emphasised the importance of strong defense in upcoming matches.
As the competition progresses, Goneyali stressed the need for more intensity and improvement in their defensive skills.
He thanked the team’s supporters and families for their encouragement and looked forward to their future matches.
