Defence is one key area which Fiji 7s coach Ben Gollings has identified that needs to improve following the first round of the Fun Flavour Fiji International 7s at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday.
Gollings has fielded two shadow national teams in the two-day competition to give all the players in the training squad a run against quality New Zealand and Australia teams.
The Fiji Barbarians led by Tevita Daugunu defeated Australia 22-12 while the Fiji Warriors captained by Josevani Soro went down to New Zealand 17-5 in driving rain.
Gollings said the first game against Australia was a good test for them. He said it was a big learning curve for the boys.
“In the New Zealand game, we were well organised because we knew what they were like,” Gollings said.
“So for our boys to play that game was fantastic. Obviously the weather wasn’t that good. But it is not an issue as you need to play in all conditions. We will go and review those games and keep learning.
“I think from my perspective, we probably need to get more settled in defence.”
