The 2025 Girmit Open Golf competition kicked off on a sunny day at the Vatuwaqa Golf course with a record number of over 140 golfers participating.

Among them was newcomer Christopher Surendra, who expressed his excitement at being a part of the tournament as a first-time competitor.

“I have been playing golf now for almost 12 months, this is my first Open golf tournament,” said Surendra.

Playing alongside professional golfers was a remarkable experience for him, and he is eager to make the most of this opportunity to improve his skills during the two days of competition.

“Playing alongside Professional golfer is a great experience for me.

“Looking at the number of participants is amazing first experience to get to play with this amount to golfers and I’m so grateful.”

Surendra urged others to consider trying out the sport of golf, highlighting the fun and excitement it offers, as well as the chance to meet new people and enjoy the game.

His enthusiasm was shared by Amitesh Chand, a professional golfer and president of Fiji Golf, who praised the organisation of the tournament by the Girmit foundation.

Chand also expressed his gratitude for the excellent weather, especially after recent bouts of bad weather.

He commended the high turnout for the competition, expecting strong competition over the next two days.

Special thanks were extended to sponsors Extra Supermarket and the Girmit foundation for their support in making the tournament possible.
