The Fiji Professional Golfers Association is looking to invest more in junior golfing in the coming years and juniors committee chairman Arvin Lal said they were taking the necessary steps in ensuring the sport carries on in the country.
“At this year’s Annual General Meeting, there was much deliberation on the development of the juniors as we don’t have many in our ranks,” said Lal speaking from the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa during the Junior Golfers clinic.
“There were a lot of discussions done and the members came up with funds along with sponsors to buy equipment’s and conduct golfing clinics two days a week in the recent two weeks holiday and a competition to close off the clinic.
“We plan to have more of these clinics every holiday; we normally have clinics every fortnight where around 20 to 30 junior golfers attend.”
Lal said they are trying to revive the sport to ensure exposure is given to gifted junior golfers who are coming through the ranks.
“There are not many young golfers nowadays so it is hard to find golfers to represent Fiji abroad.
“We all know that golf is not a cheap game and that is why a lot of parents can’t afford to send their kids to come and take part in these types of clinics and competitions.
“We are looking to make this initiative big and are asking for interested parties and organization to come on board and help us grows the sport.”
