AFTER retiring 22 years ago, Rishi Ram found himself looking for something to keep him active and connected.
Now, the retired civil servant spends much of his time at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa, where he recently joined more than 45 golfers in a Stableford golf event that was held yesterday.
Rishi’s love for golf started back in 1995, thanks to a colleague who was a passionate player and encouraged him to give the game a try.
“I wasn’t sure at first, but once I picked up the clubs, I got hooked,” he says with a smile.
Now, golf has become more than a pastime, it’s part of his weekly routine.
“I play about three times a week. It keeps me fit, and I really enjoy the friendships I’ve built on the course,” Rishi shares.
Besides golfing, he stays active around the house doing gardening and yard work.
He also appreciates the well-maintained course at the Fiji Golf Club, especially now with the dry weather.
“The conditions are perfect. The balls roll nicely, which makes the game even more fun.”
Though golf isn’t as popular among young people here in Fiji, Rishi believes it’s a great sport that more youth should consider.
“Yes, it can be a bit pricey because of equipment and fees, but many clubs help young players get started with training and support,” he says.
For Rishi, golf is not just about the game, it’s about staying healthy, enjoying good company and making the most of retirement.
“It’s a wonderful way to keep active and have fun,” he says.
With more events like the Stableford tournament, the Fiji Golf Club hopes to inspire more Fijians to take up the game and experience what it has to offer.
