FIJI Amateur Boxing Golden Gloves competition is set to take place on Friday and Saturday, with organisers currently seeking a larger venue to accommodate the 30 expected boxers.
Head coach Cam Todd announced that the competition, initially planned for last week, was postponed in the quest for a more spacious location.
In the event that no suitable venue is secured, the competition will be hosted at the Commander Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay, Suva.
Todd emphasised that the Golden Gloves would see the top four boxers in each weight division, with the participation of many of Fiji’s premier athletes.
An exciting program of approximately 30 bouts is expected each day of the competition, promising thrilling boxing action for spectators.
“The main aim of the competition, it’s our national championship, it is also one of our selections events that I look at as a coach for the upcoming year,” said Todd.
He reflected on the remarkable accomplishments of Fijian boxers in international competitions this year.
“We had a big year this year, we had a lot of international competition this year, highlighted by the World Championship, where we had one boxer Aminiasi finishing at top 10, and three other boxers finishing under the top 20 in the world, which is an outstanding achievement, giving that our boxing is still growing.”
“We also had a strong competition, with boxers coming in from Australia to compete in Fiji, and our local competition which is rising.
“The sport is growing in the country, especially the number of clubs is increasing, I’m especially happy that there is an increase in female boxers, which is great.’
Todd extended a heartfelt call to fans and supporters to continue backing Fijian boxers, emphasising the vital role of support for the athletes.
He also extended an open invitation for everyone to attend the Golden Gloves competition and show their support for the team.
