Thirty-one elderly residents of the Golden Age Home in Lautoka have been temporarily relocated to Matanakilagi House as part of an urgent response by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection to ensure their continued safety and wellbeing.

The group includes 15 women and 16 men, all of whom were moved following assessments that found the Golden Age Home to be no longer safe for habitation.

The Home has been operating for over 50 years.

According to the Ministry, the facility has suffered severe termite damage, bed bug infestations, and general deterioration, prompting swift action to avoid further health and safety risks.

“The safety and care of our senior citizens is very important to us,” the Ministry said in a statement.

“Moving them to Matanakilagi House is the best way to protect them right now, while we work on improving the Golden Age Home for future use.”

The Ministry has ensured that residents’ health and care needs will continue to be met throughout the transition, with staff providing full-time support at the new location to maintain continuity of services.

Renovations to the Golden Age Home are expected to begin shortly, with no confirmed timeline yet for the return of residents
