Despite the wet weather, betters arrived in numbers at Nadi Sports and Social Club at midday today ready to place their bets.
Club secretary Shamal Sandeep Kumar said this year’s activity prizes were being sponsored by the Motibhai Group of Companies.
Patrons and business houses were informed via social media the club would host this event and air the main race at 5pm, with the main bar area able to cater for up to 100 guests.
“The four televisions are active and airing those live matches. We have a DJ set-up. The bar ladies are all fully groomed and dressed,” he said.
“We already have close to 20 people at the facility now who are betting and utilising the bar until the close of the club today at 10 pm.”
The club had advertised for open betting, which means members of the public could also do their betting and enjoy the facility.
“We have created some hype, done some bar specials, organised some champagnes, and staff are already looking at around 30 to 50 people coming in for the Melbourne Cup.
“We have Grants betting already at the club doing the betting.”
“We have got four televisions, 55-inch televisions, and one of them is the 110-inch that will air the live match today that is going to be broadcast on NBC Sports TV.”
Following the success of last year’s activities, Mr Kumar said the club hoped to offer the same atmosphere indoors this year due to the unfavourable weather conditions.
“Last year, we had a huge crowd turn up, we had a garden party, and we set it up at the poolside. We had the televisions, the Grants betting.
“We did fashion on the field, the best dress award, and the best hat award.
“Our sponsors, Motibhai and Tappoo, have come over to support us with prizes, and this year, we have bottles of wine for best hat and bottles of wine for best dress, gift vouchers, and beverage vouchers.”
