Team Fiji to the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago have been urged by their Chef de Mission, Calvin Yee to do their utmost best when they represent the country.

Before they departed from the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee, Yee urged the athletes and players to play their hearts out for their country, despite the results in the end.

“We have a very young team to the games this year, but they are very talented and very capable.

“Our goal for the games this year is to just give our best, doesn’t matter if the medal comes or not,” he said.

More than 30 athletes and players have been selected to represent the country in the games which will kick start on Friday.

“They have been preparing well over the past few weeks, competing in various secondary schools’ competitions, club competitions, and a handful of international meets.”

Team Fiji will be competing in swimming, athletics, cycling, 7s rugby, and triathlon.

“We have a very young and good team with us this year and will certainly be watching and monitoring them over the next few years as they are our future athletes.

“We have excellent athletes for the track and field events.

“We have champion athletes from the Coca-Cola Games Francis Tuva from ACS, and Emosi Laqere from MGM.

“We have Tolu Young, an exceptional swimmer who has just returned from the World Championships in Japan.

“So, these are just a few of the medal prospects for the games.”

“We also have a very good men’s and women’s 7s team.

“For the boys, the majority of them are from Cuvu College in the hometown of rugby here in Fiji.”

The team left the country yesterday evening.
