REENA Govind and her husband Kishnan plan to capitalise on catering support equipment given to them by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection.
The 39-year-old mother-of-five received a stove and a water urn on Tuesday from Minister Sashi Kiran.
“My business has been going for two years; it mainly operates when I get phone calls for orders. We sell beans, roti parcels and sometimes palau,” she said.
Palau is a flavourful and aromatic dish that combines meat, fragrant spices, and rice.
“Sometimes we go to town where some little shops order, then we make food, and we take it to them.”
Ms Govind said the community of Koroipita had also provided immense support which in turn helped her move forward with her business.
“We’re going to take this equipment to town then we’re going to look for one spot where we will make tea, or juice, then make palau and other dishes like chop suey.”
Ms Govind thanked the ministry for the timely assistance.
“Now we can earn more money, buy our house and we can put some money in the bank.”
Ms Kiran said two income-generating projects that included this assistance were worth over $19,000, provided by the ministry with the support of development partners.
“These include a sewing and tailoring project valued at $18,000, benefitting the women of this community, where 34 sewing machines and starter packs and an industrial overlocking machine are being handed over,” Ms Kiran said.
