IN a step forward for gender equality in the workplace, the Nasinu Town Council has employed its first female garbage collector.
The council said the appointment reflected its commitment to providing equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, race, or background.
Amalaini Bui, who joined the team in July, said her decision to apply for the job was strongly influenced by her family, including her four children.
She said her Christian faith had helped her face challenges in her daily life as a woman, and she encouraged women not to be afraid of stepping into a man’s field of work.
Ms Bui called on communities to assist sanitation workers by ensuring waste is properly tied in garbage bags on collection days. She says waste collection is often delayed when rubbish is left scattered and not properly packed in plastic bags, forcing workers to spend time cleaning the area instead of tending to other parts of the town.
The council stated waste management was one of its core responsibilities and required cooperation between workers and the public to maintain clean and healthy communities.
The council added it would continue to support inclusive employment practices while improving trash collection in the municipality.
