With the lighting of the Powerade National Torch Relay officially launched yesterday, it also welcomes the beginning of the biggest secondary schools annual competition, the Coca-Cola Games.

This year, the torch relay is destined to visit about 54 schools all over Fiji over the next nine days. Fiji Secondary School Athletics Association president Marika Uluinaceva said they were pleased to kick start the 2023 Coca-Cola Games.

“On behalf of the FSSAA, we would like to thank all the stakeholders who have been involved over the years until today,” Uluinaceva said.

“After thorough discussions with the Ministry of Education, we have been able to come up with dates for the event that will suit everyone.”

Game sponsors Digicel Fiji, Pacific Energy, Fiji Gas, and Coca-Cola Ltd were all part of the event.

Uluinaceva said members of the public could expect a thriller in two weeks time as smaller and unknown schools have been seen having off-season training since last year.

“This year’s games will be different from past years’ games because there will be a very high level of competition between schools.”

He mentioned this was seen in the 2022 Coca-Cola Games where there were a few major upsets in the senior boys and girls divisions.

“So we are encouraging everyone to come and watch three days of display of raw talent from your athletes.”

Last year’s overall champion in the boys and girls divisions will have the honor of carrying the torch into the HFC Bank Stadium on April 27 to kick start the 2023 Coca-Cola Games.

The relay torch was launched at the Coca-Cola Amatil Fiji Ltd headquarters in Laucala Beach yesterday.
