A gale warning is now in force for parts of Fiji waters as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu continues to strengthen and move southeast of the group.
The Fiji Meteorological Service said the gale warning applies to Yasawa, Mamanuca and the Southwest Viti Levu waters, while a gale alert is in place for the Kadavu Passage. A strong wind warning remains in force for the rest of Fiji waters.
At midday today, Tropical Cyclone Vaianu was moving southeast at around 10km/h.
Forecasters say the system is in a favourable environment for further intensification and is likely to reach Category 3 strength within the next 12 hours.
While the cyclone’s centre is expected to remain southwest of Fiji as it tracks away, its associated weather is forecast to affect the country from tonight.
Strong northeasterly winds of up to 45km/h with gusts reaching 70km/h are expected over Yasawa, Mamanuca, western Viti Levu and Kadavu.
From tomorrow, winds are forecast to turn northerly and strengthen to around 60km/h, with gusts up to 90km/h over affected areas, while other parts of the country will experience winds of up to 45km/h with gusts of 70km/h.
Rainbands associated with the cyclone are expected to bring periods of heavy rain across most parts of the country, increasing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas.
A heavy rain warning and flash flood alert remain in force for the entire Fiji group, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant.
