WAINIKELI Junior Secondary School on Taveuni is organising a fundraising event this Saturday for the purpose of expanding its facilities and meet the growing demand of education in the area.

The school currently has only one block with three classrooms.

Two are used for classes while the third serves as a staff room. With increasing interest from students in nearby villages such as Naselesele, Qeleni, and Bouma, the school is planning ahead.

School principal Eneriko Qalila said more students want to attend the school as evident in the increased enrolment queries for next year.

He said they are preparing to take in 40 as Year 9 students and 25 for Year 10 next year.

“There is a strong demand for more students to come to school here. The school is being brought to their doorsteps,” he said.

Mr Qalila said the school’s goal was to have classroom blocks ready for each year level up to Year 13 by 2029.

He said they are not waiting for outside help and are taking the first step themselves by raising funds for the construction of new classrooms.
