Full power restoration expected by Sunday, says EFL CEO

Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) says full restoration of electricity supply across Viti Levu is expected by Sunday,  following widespread damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Vaianu.

While the cyclone did not make direct landfall, it significantly impacted EFL’s overhead network, resulting in major outages across the Western and Central Divisions.

Chief Executive Officer Fatiaki Gibson said teams have been working around the clock to restore power despite challenging conditions.

“Restoration is being carried out systematically, with strict safety protocols requiring every section of the network to be inspected and confirmed safe before re-energisation,” he said.

EFL confirmed that all affected 33kV transmission lines in the Western Division have been repaired and re-energised, with supply restored to most areas.

In the Central Division, a major fault on the Wailoa–Cunningham 132kV transmission line had severely constrained supply, forcing temporary power rationing. However, the line has now been repaired, tested and brought back online, meaning rationing is no longer required.

Mr Gibson said priority has been given to critical infrastructure, including hospitals, water and sewerage systems, business centres and residential areas.

Power has now been restored to most parts of Viti Levu, with remaining customers expected to be progressively reconnected over the coming days.

“Full restoration is targeted by Sunday, weather permitting and subject to site accessibility,” Mr Gibson said.

He acknowledged that some flood-affected areas may take longer to reconnect.

EFL has apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their patience as crews continue restoration efforts.
