STRENGTHENING the depth in his squad, Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s coach Saiasi Fuli would be strategic with engaging players in the World SVNS Series.

The major focus for the team was the Olympic Games next year which meant Fuli needed to have the best players in top shape in their quest for a gold medal finish.

Fijiana stunned the sevens world in 2021 by winning its first ever bronze medal in the Olympics and expectations would be higher in Paris next year.

Fuli said as they build up through their performance in the series, the entire team needed to be tactical.

“We need to be smart in how we plan the season and how to manage the squad members, we don’t want a very big squad and not too small either but the right number for us to stay on the journey right to the Olympics. It’s still a long road because we have the HSBC Sevens Series so having the depth is really important.

“Now its about being smart with how we train, being smart with how we choose players, so we need to work well in order to achieve the bigger target which is the Olympics as well as the smaller goals we’ve set for ourselves in the Series.”

The former national player added consistency in individual performance would be key in his selection.

Fijiana would resume training on Wednesday after a four-day break with the likes of Laisani Moceisawana, Verenaisi Bari, Lavena Cavuru expected to return from injuries.
