THE Fiji Trades Union Congress Union members will deliver its petition to the Indian High Commission Office in Suva this morning.

FTUC executive officer Jyotika Sharma said that the petition was to be delivered yesterday but the Indian High Commission’s Office was closed for the Holi festival.

“Our trade union leaders gathered in Suva today (yesterday) to deliver a letter of protest against the Modi (Narendra) government labour laws. This is ITUC’s global campaign protesting against the Indian government’s labour laws,” Ms Sharma said.

She said the trade union leaders would once again visit the Indian High Commission office at Suva’s Butt Street today to deliver the petition, signed by 35 trade union leaders in the country.

Meanwhile, an application for protest outside the Indian High Commission office was declined by the Fiji Police Force yesterday.

According to ITUC, the Modi government has come under heavy criticism from a diverse group of national figures ahead of the national elections, which are set to be held in April to May this year.

Trade unions denounced moves to introduce new obstacles to collective bargaining, towards the privatisation of social security to make it easier for employers to impose mass retrenchment of workers.
