The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has confirmed that all seasonal workers affected by the temporary release at the Rarawai Mill will be paid their full entitlements, following an agreement reached with relevant trade unions.
In a statement issued yesterday, FSC clarified reports circulating about the employment status of seasonal workers, saying that 145 workers have been temporarily released after “comprehensive consultations and mutual agreement with the unions.”
The decision follows the fire incident at the Rarawai Mill on September 17, which caused extensive damage and forced a suspension of crushing operations.
“While FSC teams have continued to work diligently to restore operations, progress has been impacted by external factors such as the delayed availability of critical parts and overseas delivery timelines,” said FSC Chairman Nitya Reddy.
During the mill’s downtime, the Corporation had retained all employees, including seasonal workers, by assigning them to alternative duties such as housekeeping and estate work. These activities have now concluded, prompting a review of the workforce requirements.
“It was agreed that approximately 145 out of 162 seasonal employees would be released in accordance with the existing Collective Agreements.”
“A limited number of workers will remain to assist with mill maintenance, including fire rehabilitation works.”
FSC emphasised that the release of workers followed a “last in, first out” approach to protect the interests of long-serving employees.
The company also confirmed it had met all seven-day notice requirements under its Collective Agreement with the unions.
The last day of employment for the affected seasonal workers is today, after which all outstanding payments and entitlements will be processed.
“During this period, workers will be paid their entitlements owed, as agreed with their respective unions,” Reddy assured.
“We greatly appreciate the cooperation and understanding shown by all unions and employees during this challenging period.”
FSC said crushing operations are expected to resume by early to mid-December 2025, pending completion of safety checks and repair sign-offs.
“Once the mill is operational again, all affected seasonal workers will be re-engaged under the existing crushing roster agreements.”
“FSC remains fully committed to restoring normal operations as soon as possible.”
