The Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) confirmed a workplace incident that occurred yesterday at the Lautoka Mill, where an employee was injured while clearing bagasse from a conveyor belt.
The employee, whose identity has not been disclosed, received immediate medical attention and is currently under care at Lautoka Hospital.
“Our thoughts are with the employee and his family,” said Bhan Singh, FSC Chief Executive Officer.
He said the incident prompted a swift and coordinated response from FSC’s emergency and mill teams, who dismantled the conveyor belt system to facilitate a safe rescue.
Mr Singh commended the teams for their quick action, noting that their “safety-first approach” was critical in managing the situation effectively.
As a result of the rescue operation, milling activities at Lautoka Mill have been temporarily halted to allow for repairs to the conveyor system.
Mr Singh confirmed that repairs are underway, with an estimated completion time of 36 hours.
FSC has also suspended harvesting activities in all sectors until the mill is fully operational.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to the highest standards of safety and operational resilience.”
