Fiji Rugby Union has paid tribute to Josaia Wini Raisuqe, a former Fiji 7s representative, who died in a road accident in France yesterday at the age of 30.

In a statement, FRU said Raisuqe, originally from Lutu, Naitasiri, was a gifted athlete whose rugby journey inspired many.

“He first rose to prominence on the global stage under Coach Ben Ryan, debuting in the 2015 Hong Kong Sevens playing alongside the current Flying Fijian coach Osea Kolinisau and quickly making his mark with 14 tries across five tournaments,” said Fiji Rugby.

“His raw talent, powerful running, and fearless play embodied the spirit of Fijian rugby.”

Raisuqe’s built a strong professional career in France, playing for clubs including Stade Français, Nevers, and Castres Olympique.

“His recent role at Castres saw him transition into a formidable flanker, contributing to their Top 14 campaign and becoming a well-loved figure within the Fijian diaspora in Europe.”

“In 2024, he proudly donned the Fiji jersey once more, earning a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games — a testament to his enduring commitment to the sport and his country.”

FRU said his passion for the game and his impact on the field will long be remembered.

“He was a son of Fiji whose legacy in rugby — both here and abroad — will live on in the hearts of fans, teammates, and loved ones.”
