The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has made a major investment in rugby technology, purchasing five Hudl cameras worth approximately A$150,000 to enhance game analysis during the Skipper Cup competition.

FRU Chairman John Sanday confirmed the purchase, emphasising that one camera will be deployed at each of the five venues hosting Skipper Cup matches every Saturday. With ten teams competing weekly, this ensures parallel filming across all fixtures, enhancing the strategic insight available to teams.

“Each Skipper Cup fixture will now be recorded by a Hudl camera that captures a panoramic view of the play,” Sanday said.

The Hudl Focus camera line including Focus Outdoor, Indoor, Flex, and Focus Point features automated tracking, HD panoramic video, live streaming, and seamless integration with Hudl’s analytics suite.

The cameras offer up to 180° panoramic capture, real time ball tracking and stereo audio, recording every whistle and announcement. Footage is uploaded automatically to the Hudl platform ideal for live coding and statistical tagging via Hudl Sports code.

Sanday highlighted the competitive advantage.

“By enabling live tagging of player actions and analysing opposition patterns on the fly, our coaches can better strategise and counter opponents effectively.

“With each team required to possess a level 3 certified coach, the FRU is ensuring they can fully leverage this technology to elevate coaching standards and strategic preparedness,” he added.

The new Board sees this as a forward-thinking tool arming coaches with advanced film and data to refine game plans, drive tactical growth, and enhance the professionalism of club rugby in Fiji.

“This is an investment in coaching capacity one that will materially boost our standards and support smarter, data driven rugby.”
