FIJI Rugby Union (FRU) has acknowledged the immense contribution of the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens as the prestigious tournament prepares for its 50th edition.

FRU chief executive officer Koli Sewabu highlighted the tournament’s legacy, which is deeply woven into the development of Fiji’s sevens culture and continues to play a vital role in sustaining the depth and vibrancy of the game locally.

“For five decades, the tournament has been a proving ground for local talent, helping to shape generations of players who have gone on to represent Fiji on the world stage,” Sewabu said.

“Beyond its role in high performance, the Marist 7s has consistently strengthened grassroots rugby by giving young and emerging players the opportunity to compete, be seen, and aspire to higher honours.”

The growth and stature of the competition have made the Marist 7s the mecca of local sevens tournaments, attracting countless grassroots teams determined to unleash their rugby talents against the top local sevens teams and invited overseas sides.

This intense rugby spectacle has consistently unveiled numerous international stars, including Waisale Serevi, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Pio Tuwai, and William Ryder — all of whom began their careers or proved their mettle at the Marist 7s.

As the most popular and sought-after tournament in the country, Sewabu believes the competition is the toughest domestic tournament for any team or player to participate in.

“It is deemed the toughest 7s competition in Fiji in my opinion, with teams playing numerous high-stakes games in 2-3 days, testing endurance, skill, and mental toughness,” he said.

But beyond the players and talent identification, Sewabu credits the tournament as a hub for developing referees, coaches, trainers, medics, volunteers, and team managers, enhancing overall rugby administration and event management that contributes to Fiji Rugby’s ecosystem.

The 5330th edition of the Marist 7s kicks off tomorrow, Thursday, March 26, at the HFC Bank Stadium in Laucala Bay, Suva, with the Under-18 to Under-21 pool games.
