Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor says the win by the national 7s men’s side in Singapore was down to the hard work put in during the preparations.

A young Fijian side defied all odds to win the Singapore 7s title defeating traditional rivals New Zealand 28-17 in the Cup final.

O’Connor said the participation in local tournaments was a boost for the side which helped them find glory in Singapore.

“I think the team prepared really well.

“They did participate in a few local tournaments. The Mini International tournament, the Marist 7s are some of the top tournaments they took part in,” O’Connor said.

He said the team had more hunger for a win after not being able to participate at the Malaga 7s in Spain in January.

“The win in Singapore is the fruit of all the hard work put in to prepare the team especially after we couldn’t travel to the Spain leg.”

Fiji will take part in the Vancouver event this week.

The Ben Gollings-coached side is pooled with USA, Kenya and England.
