FIJI Rugby Union (FRU) has appointed Fusi Feaunati as Head of Women’s Rugby, with player welfare and grassroots development among his priorities.

FRU General Manager High-Performance Nacanieli Cawaninuka said the appointment marked the next phase in developing women’s rugby in Fiji.

“The appointment of a dedicated Head of Women’s recognises both the progress already achieved, and the work still required to establish a sustainable, world-class women’s rugby system,” Cawaninuka said.

Feaunati said the potential for women’s rugby in Fiji was enormous, but sustained success required strong support systems for players.

“You’re never going to see the best of what that person has to offer through the game of rugby,” he said, stressing the importance of prioritising players’ wellbeing and welfare.

He said women often faced the challenge of balancing rugby with employment, motherhood, family responsibilities and cultural expectations.

Feaunati also plans to strengthen pathways from schools and clubs to the national 15s and sevens programmes.

He said his immediate priority was to meet players, coaches and stakeholders to understand Fiji’s rugby environment before introducing changes.

Although educated in New Zealand, Feaunati said he would not automatically impose overseas philosophies on Fiji Rugby.

Instead, he wants to work with local stakeholders to develop systems that reflect Fiji’s culture and the needs of its players.
