Bula
There are moments in time when events leave an indelible impression on our minds.
When the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II was made yesterday, there was shock and sadness around the world.
Many people had a surreal feeling about the turn of events. They had only know Queen Elizabeth II as their monarch, especially given her 7-decade long reign.
On the homefront, there is a deep connection with the British monarch that dates back to the period when Fiji was ceded to Great Britain on October 10, 1874.
The late queen visited Fiji six times – 1953, 1963, 1970, 1973, 1977 and 1982. Her first visit was in December 1953, only six months after she was crowned.
The big news on the front page of The Fiji Times for Saturday, September 10 is about the death of Queen Elizabeth II. We share the emotions that have swept across the world as millions of people mourn her death and express sadness.
