Expect a rise in human trafficking as the drug situation in Fiji grows more rampant.
This was the warning sounded by Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) executive director Vani Catanasiga, who said the NGO had warned about the growing drug trade years ago.
She added that decision makers at the time did not fully understand what the costs of their inaction on drug trafficking would be, and the results were being seen in our communities now. That’s the big news on the front page of The Fiji Times for Saturday, February 3.

# YOUNG girls made up 66 per cent of rape victims whose cases reached the Fiji High Courts in 2023. This was highlighted in an analysis by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement of rape and sexual offence cases called before the High Court. The analysis revealed that over the last seven years, girls under the age of 18 continued to be the overwhelming majority of victims and survivors of rape.
# THE state is likely to charge more individuals allegedly connected to the movement of 4.8 tons of methamphetamine within Nadi late last year, Acting Director of Public Prosecutions John Rabuku said. He revealed this in the High Court in Lautoka yesterday where the 13 people accused of the crime made their first court appearance.
# ONE of two people caught with methamphetamine in a car they were traveling in 2023 has been sentenced to one year and two weeks jail term. Atish Chand, 40, appeared before Suva magistrate Krishan Prasad after he was found in possession of 0.089 grams of methamphetamine.
