Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu yesterday saved FijiFirst MP Ketan Lal from being sanctioned by the Privileges Committee, but this intervention by the Cakaudrove chief was not acknowledged when the MP was given a chance to withdraw his comments. Leader of Government in Parliament, Lynda Tabuya, had moved Mr Lal be referred to the Privileges Committee for imputing there was a rise in crime ecause of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, and that he had also used offensive words by referring to his age. Ratu Naiqama, however, suggested proceedings be suspended for the House discuss the matter, and that a workshop be organised so new MPs could be trained on decorum and other House ettiquette.

That’s the big news on the front page of The Fiji Times for Wednesday, July 12.

The second story on the front page is about a controversial law that forced seven prominent women to take the Government to court which is now up for review in Parliament.
