Reconsider taking benefits away.
This is the plea from Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) head Vani Catanasiga as she joined others who expressed disappointment at Minister for Women Lynda Tabuya’s announcement that the ministry planned to whittle down the list of people receiving social welfare aid.
Pearce Home Trust chairman and former FCOSS director Mohammed Hassan Khan said he was against the idea of people being “removed” as some people were still recovering post COVID-19, especially the elderly.
Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said the poor must brace for more hardship as Government was making life more difficult for the poor and low-income families.
Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali said the removal of welfare recipients from the system was an “unfortunate and unfair” decision as majority were women who were not in paid employment as they worked with children, elderly and persons with disability.
