IF any girl under the age of 16 is impregnated, it is classified as rape under the law, even if she consented to the pregnancy and was in a romantic relationship with the boy. This, according to Attorney-General Siromi Turaga.

He said under the law, if the girl was 16, she was still a minor.

“Therefore, she isn’t liable to make decisions for herself, so if she gets pregnant that becomes a legal matter,” he said.

Mr Turaga also urged parents to take responsibility for their children and ensure that the law is followed. That’s the big news on the front page of The Fiji Times for Saturday, December 30.

In the second story, two permanent secretaries are under investigation in relation to the controversial Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA) signed last month between their ministries and an American wind turbine company.

PSC chair Luke Rokovada told The Fiji Times that “it doesn’t bode well with one of the two permanent secretaries” with a forensic investigation likely to be carried out on the civil servant.

The PPA was later deemed “unenforceable” by Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica.
